Ancient site of Samshyapura Overview
Samshyapura is an ancient archaeological site located near the town of Mangalore in Karnataka, India. It is said to have been the centre of Jain worship for centuries and is associated with legendary kings like Lord Balarama, Vanappa Nadiga, and Arjuna. It is believed to have been founded by the Jain Maharshi Samshyapuriji, who lived here two millennia ago.

The site is situated on the banks of the Netravathi River and is known for its old temples associated with the legendary kings. The temple complex is spread across five acres of land and consists of seven ancient temples and several chapels. Each temple is dedicated to Shri Phalguni (Balarama), Vanappa Nadiga, and Arjuna. The principal deity of the temple is Shri Palleswara (Lord Shiva). It also has a Jain temple built in the 11th century, which is comprised of a audience hall and three sanctums.

Samshyapura was once a flourishing town of Jainism and one of the important centres of Jain learning. It is said to have been founded by the legendary feudatory King Karanath, also known as Kaashaya Palaka, who is said to have governed the area of Karwar during the reign of Emperor Ashoka. Other names associated with the site are Samshyapuravaridhi and Sahasradhani, which are mentioned in various ancient texts.

• Several inscriptions dating back to the reign of the Kadamba king, Kakustha Varman (AD 455-477) were discovered at the site.
• Adi Shankaracharya, the important figure in Hinduism, is believed to have visited Samshyapura.
