Overview:
Megalithic cists and cairns are prehistoric chamber tombs located mostly in Scotland, but also elsewhere in Britain. These tomb monuments were constructed out of stone, and typically take the shape of either a round cairn or a rectangular cist. Historical evidence suggests that they were built and used in the Neolithic period. Eluchur is a monument located on the Isle of Bute in Scotland, which consists of a complex of megalithic cists and a stone circle. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Megalithic cists are large and rectangular chamber tombs; they typically consist of several sections of stones laid in an upright position to form a box. Most cists also have a sloping capstone which completes the box structure. Cairns, on the other hand, are mound tombs consisting of a large mass of stones. The raised body of the cairn is usually surrounded by a stone rubble wall and sometimes contains a stone chamber. The stone circle at Eluchur is comprised of 22 stones, of which 17 remain standing. Megalithic cists and cairns are still standing in numerous locations throughout the United Kingdom.
