Basilica of Bom Jesus is a 16th-century, Roman Catholic minor basilica located in Goa, India. The church is dedicated to Infant Jesus and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered to be one of the oldest churches in Goa. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Basilica of Bom Jesus contains the tomb and remains of St. Francis Xavier. The church is notable for its architectural beauty and style. The walls are lined with Corinthian pilasters, while the interior is gilded with gold. The ceiling is ornately painted with floral designs and cherubs. The construction of The Basilica of Bom Jesus began in 1594 and was completed in 1605. The church was consecrated to the Patron Saint of Goa, Francis Xavier. During the 1840s, three major renovation projects were undertaken to renovate the facade and the interior of the Basilica. The most recent renovation began in 2013 and was completed in 2014.
