Overview:
Megalithic cists and cairns, also known as dolmens, are prehistoric burial and ritual sites that can be found in the Tirupporur area in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. They are made up of large stones and rocks, many dating back to more then 2000 BCE. The site consists of several cist tombs and cairns, making it a popular attraction and mystery to visitors. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The cists and cairns are made out of single and multiple slabs of rocks and boulders that were stacked in order to form burial chambers. The cists are larger, most commonly made up of five, seven or more slabs, and contain primary and secondary burials, pottery, weapons and other artifacts.
