Overview:
thic Cists and Cairns, Sembakkam are pre-historic burial monuments located in Sembakkam village of Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu, India. These megalithic monuments date back to the Iron Age and are considered to be the oldest megaliths in India. The monuments are heaps of stones with burial chambers crafted inside them, and are believed to be built by an Iron Age civilization that existed in and around Sembakkam nearly 3000 to 4000 years ago. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The megalithic Cists and Cairns present at Sembakkam village are typically constructed in a circular shape, mostly arranged with stones placed in a criss-cross fashion. The burial chambers are crafted from stones in a mound of stones, and are surrounded by a stone wall. The walls of the chamber vary in height, typically being around 1.2 to 1.4 meters tall.
