Overview:

The Jamma Masjid is located in Delhi, India and is one of the largest mosques in India. It is also commonly known as the "Friday Mosque" due to the mosque being especially crowded with worshippers on Fridays. The mosque was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1656, and is considered to be a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.

History:

The Jamma Masjid has a prayer chamber that is rectangular in shape and measures 35 metres by 33 metres. The narrow verandahs run along the sides of the mosque and are covered by arches. The arches are adorned with inscriptions of verses of the Qur'an. The mosque also has three entrance gates and four towers which are topped in marble. The history of the Jamma Masjid dates back to the 15th century when Sultan Sikandar Lodi built the first mosque in 1526–27. It was subsequently renovated by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1656. The mosque has been destroyed and rebuilt a few times due to lightning storms, riots and earthquakes. The current version of the mosque was built in 1752.
