Rock cut Temple Overview Rock cut temples are historical monumental structures that are constructed by cutting into solid rocks. They are found in many areas from India and the Middle East to regions of Europe. These temples were mostly made by ancient civilizations like Persians, Greeks, Assyrians, and Egyptians. Built from the 5th century BCE to 4th century CE, such monuments were a symbol of faith, art, and architecture in their respective civilizations. These temples comprise caves and entries carved into the hard rocks with columns and inner sanctum-shrines for deities. These structures generally have walls which have been carved with sculptures and designs, often with a huge central figure or deity as the central point. Most of the rock-cut temples have a number of small ancillary shrines which are dedicated to minor gods or regional deities. These temples are further characterized by richly ornamented ceilings and floorings, along with intricately designed capitals that compliment the artistic decoration. Rock Cut Temple History The first example of rock cut temples trace their history back to 3000 BC when Assyrians began to use metal tools for carving into rock. But mostly, rock cut temples began to be constructed between 5th century BC and 4th century CE, after the decline of Buddhism in India. Numerous rock cut monuments were created in the region which is now known as modern India, especially in the regions of Karnataka and Kerala. Further, rock-cut monuments were created in the areas of the Middle East, North Africa and the peripheral parts of Europe. Rock Cut Temple Interesting Facts •The Ajanta and Ellora caves are two of the most famous examples of rock cut monuments from the ancient world. •Rock-cut structures have been constructed around the world and are an important part of many world religions. •The Kailasa Temple at Ellora is considered to be the most spectacular of all rock-cut temples. •The ancient Egyptians also used rock-cut technology to make some of their tombs and burial chambers.
