Vishnu and Sridevi Idols, Sengirai Overview Vishnu and Sridevi Idols, Sengirai are a set of two 11th-century bronze idols of Hindu deity Vishnu and his devotee Sridevi. This set was discovered from an archeological site near Yaganti, a village of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is believed to be from the period of the Chalukyas of Vengi. The set is displayed in Sri Venkateswara Museum, Tirupati, India. Prominent Features The Vishnu idol is about 2 feet tall, and is seated in a yogic posture on the serpent Ananta. He holds the Shankh (conch), Chakra (wheel), Gada (mace) and Padma (lotus) in his four hands. He is adorned with exquisite jewelry. The Sridevi figure is seated on a Kadali-naga (a serpent with a hood resembling a banana tree). She holds the Shankha, Chakra and Gada in her hands and has jewelry around her slender waist and neck. History The Vishnu and Sridevi Idols, Sengirai are part of a set of four bronze idols discovered in 1923 by a farmer in the village of Sengirai, in Yaganti in Anantapur district. The other two idols are Lalitha-Laxmi and Bhudevi (Goddesses). Prior to their discovery near Yaganti, they were also worshipped in a temple at Gouravaram in the panchayat of Yaganti in the Anantapur district. After discovery, they were kept in the local Vishnu temple and were later shifted to the Sri Venkateswara Museum in Tirupati in 1974. Interesting facts The design of the Vishnu and Sridevi Idols, Sengirai is considered to be masterpieces of 11th century bronze art in India.
