Overview:
The Tiger-Headed Rock Cut Temple at Salvankuppam, a village in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu, India, is an ancient structure dating back to the 5th century AD. It comprises two cells, both of which have an elaborate entrance carved out of rock. Inside these cells are several sculptures of Hindu deities including Lord Shiva, Nataraja, Ganesha and Parvati. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most striking feature of the temple is the impressive carving of a tiger’s head above the entrance. The temple also has a large pillared hall where devotees can offer prayers and make offerings to the presiding deity. Other unique features include a large stupa, sculpted pillars and inscriptions in Tamil characters. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour
Interesting facts:
The temple is believed to have been built as an offering to Shiva, the presiding deity of the temple. It is also said to have been used by Buddhist monks who lived in the area during the Pallava period. The inscriptions inside the temple are in a combination of Tamil and Pallava characters, reflecting the influence of both religions.
