Megalithic cists and cairns are monuments consisting of single or multiple stone structures, cists (stone cists) for interment and cairns for marking the site of burials, and typically found in areas of western and northern Europe, notably in Scotland and Ireland. The cists and cairns at Perunagar in India, are a very rare example of such monuments located in India, with some especially fine specimens. History:
The cists and cairns found at Perunagar are over 3,000 years old and vary in size from small single-stone cists to large multi-stone cairns. Most of these monuments are constructed from huge, black graniteslabs that weigh several tons. These cists are surrounded by circular structures of stones and small mound-like structures that also contain several small stone cists.
