Overview:
The monument consists of four granite obelisks standing on a 6m-wide stone circle. It is framed by a cast-iron fence decorated with four globes mounted atop the log pillars. History:
The Laur Pillar is the oldest and largest national historical monument in Russia. It is a historically significant object of the Vladimir-Suzdal school of art, which is considered a part of world cultural heritage. Additionally, the monument is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is also associated with many spectacular folklore tales and mythological stories, and it is considered to be the source of the word "laur", which means "pillar" in old Russian. The monument was created in 1824 by Russian stonemason Nikolai Terentyev, who was commissioned to build the monument by Grand Duke Sergey Pavlovich.
