The Large Unfinished Rock Sculpture Similar To Arjuna’s Penance , Mamallapuram is an unfinished rock sculpture located near the city of Mahabalipuram(Mamallapuram), Tamil Nadu. It is believed that the sculpture is an unfinished version of an Arjuna’s Penance, also known as the Descent of the Ganges, another rock sculpture nearby. It is almost identical to the Arjuna’s Penance but slightly smaller in size. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Large Unfinished Rock Sculpture Similar To Arjuna’s Penance , Mamallapuram consists of two carved boulders side by side. The sculpture measures 37.86 feet long and 19.62 feet wide. There are several figures and scenes depicting Hindu mythology carved on the rock. There is an image of Balarama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, accompanied by a cowherd, a monkey and a horse. There is also an image of Bhairava, a guardian deity who is often depicted in Hindu temples as an aggressive figure with a fierce face and eight hands, each carrying a weapon.
