The Lakshminarasimhaswamy Temple, also commonly known as the Madurai Meenakshi Temple, is a Hindu temple situated in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the most prominent shrines of the city and has been celebrated for centuries for its majestic architecture, detailed sculptures and its significant contributions to the Tamil culture. The temple is dedicated to two deities, Lord Shiva and Meenakshi, thus making it a double shrine. History:
The entrance of the Lakshminarasimhaswamy temple complex is marked by a huge gateway called the ‘Gopuram’. It is a five-storied structure, each level adorned with numerous statues of gods and goddesses. As you enter, you can find large numbers of devotees and pilgrims who have congregated to offer their prayers. Moving further inside, you can encounter the majestic shrines, decorated with numerous precious stones, including rubies, diamonds, emeralds and sapphires. You can also find large numbers of intricately carved pillars, depicting various Hindu gods and goddesses. The history of the Lakshminarasimhaswamy Temple dates back to the 4th century AD. During this time, King Kulasekhara Pandya built a temple for the deity Meenakshi in the city of Madurai.
