Overview:
The temple of Sri Somesvara is a famous Shaiva shrine and is dedicated to Lord Siva. Legend has it that Sri Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, had worshipped the Siva idol here during his search for Sita. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple is designed in a striking structure that reflects great military zeal. The temple comprises a sanctum, mukhamandapa, ardha mandapa, pillared verandas and a gopuram. The pillar structures at the front entrance of the temple have been intricately carved in the form of a rudrabhaga or ‘mace’ style. The temple is believed to be constructed during the period of Vijayanagara dynasty. It is believed that the temple was constructed during the 16th century. One of the inscriptions in the temple indicate that Hanumanta Iyer, a prominent Jain saint lived here in the 11th century.
