It was built by Sultan Alauddin Khilji(1296–1316) of the Delhi Sultanate as a victory tower to commemorate his victory over Norangabad in 1303. The tower has been treated as a unique historical site and is considered significant in terms of its architectural value. Kos Minar-Norangabad is hexagonal in shape and stands at a height of about 22 m.
