Megalithic Cists and Cairns, Sanur Overview Megalithic Cists and Cairns in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia are ancient archaeological sites of roughly 5000 years old. The megalithic structures are lining the beach near the surf point and consist of an array of circular and rectangular stone cists and cairns. The cists were used for burials for the people of the ancient times and the cairns are believed to be offering stones from important religious ceremonies. Prominent Features The megalithic cists and cairns in Sanur have various features that differentiate them from the other cists and cairns found in Bali. The cists are circular in form with four vertical stone walls, a flat ceiling and a flat base in the center of the cist. There are also some remains of a wooden door that guarded and protected the occupant inside them. The cairns are generally built in a rectangular form with one flat side and the cairns have a flat base and gradual angles that deepen towards the center. The cairns also have distinct features at the top including obelisks, phallic depictions and alignments to the north and south. History The history of the megalithic cists and cairns in Sanur is uncertain and the exact age of them is unknown. Although the structures are believed to be from the Bronze Age, some scholars suggest the structures might be from the early Iron Age, given the technological complexity of their construction. Although the exact history is unknown, the fact that the structures are lined along the beach is a testament to how long they have existed in the region and the importance of their cultural history. They are also featured in local folklore and it is said that they were once part of the landscape of a powerful kingdom in the past.
