Brief History:

is one of the oldest and largest Mosques located in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. The mosque was built by the then Nawab of Arcot, Mohammed Ali Khan Wallajah, in 1795. It is situated at the south-eastern end of the temple town of Rameshwaram. Jama Masjid also known as Panchwadi Masjid consists of five open-air pavilions, connected by a low covered corridor, commonly known as ‘Panchwadi’. The mosque is considered to be a fine example of Muslim architecture with details of intricate craftsmanship in stucco, and finely carved wooden columns and brackets. The mosque is one of the four distinct mosques in Rameshwaram, namely, Jama Masjid, Panchwadi Masjid, Meenakshi Masjid, and Idgah Masjid. Common prayers are held on Fridays at the Jama Masjid. Non-Muslims are also allowed to visit the mosque but not allowed inside the building during prayers. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Jama Masjid of Rameshwaram is an important religious building built in the early 17th century. It is the only surviving 16th century mosque in Tamil Nadu. The grand edifice was built by Tipu Sultan and also referred to as the Jumma Mosque. The square shaped mosque has a long verandah in front with five prominently arched recesses pierced on five sides of it. The roof of the large prayer hall is raised on five arches decorated with stucco work. The main prayer hall has a unique–pillared triple bay sanctuary. The interior walls have Islamic inscriptions written in ornamental relief. At the rear part, there is a minaret of 15 feet height, and the whole structure is made out of brick and lime mortar. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Visiting Hours:
