Brief History:
Jama Masjid, Lucknow is a famous mosque located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Built during the reign of the fourth Nawab of Awadh, Asaf-ud-Daula in year 1784, Jama Masjid has great historic importance in India. The red sandstone and marble minaret of the mosque is a reminder of the Mughal architecture in the region. It is said that around 5000 laborers worked day and night for 4 years to construct the magnificent structure. The mosque has 3 entrances along with a huge main hall with wall engravings of verses from Koran that are made up of calligraphy by a royal court artist. The mosque also houses a collection of relics from Prophet Muhammad. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Jama Masjid in Lucknow is a fine example of Mughal Architecture. The grand three-storey mosque was built during the rule of Asaf-ud-Daulah in 1784-1785. The mosque was built in white sandstone and decorated with impressive designs. The mosque is modelled on the Shah Jahan era Taj Mahal and features an elaborate arched entryway, a huge inner courtyard, and a central octagonal dome. The upper and lower terraces are connected by four high towers with domes. The facades of the mosque feature intricate carvings and faded frescoes, reflecting the art and culture of the period. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
