Brief History:
Jama Masjid, Dehradun In India is a mosque that was constructed in 1824 by Sikander Begum, wife of Gulab Singh, the founder of princely State of Jammu and Kashmir. The site of the mosque was chosen by the Mughal emperor, Akbar, in 1558 and it stands there until today. The place of worship symbolizes the bond of friendship and love between the two royal families of Kashmir and Jammu, Gulab Singh’s family and Pathania’s family. Architecture:
Jama Masjid, Dehradun is a well-known and popular mosque located in Dehradun’s Saharanpur Chowk. The mosque was built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1681AD and is one of the oldest surviving mosques in India. The architecture of Jama Masjid, Dehradun is an amalgamation of Mughal and Rajputana styles of architecture. The mosque is built in a rectangular shape with three domes at its top. The first two domes are made from stone and the third is constructed with lime stone. The entrance gates of the mosque has two carved and arched doors made from sandstone. The wall of the mosque is made up of traditional red sandstone while the flooring consists of black and white granite design. The interior of the mosque features a grand Mughal style of architecture. There is the main prayer hall in the middle, which is covered with beautiful wooden panels, and with three small domes surrounded by four minarets. All four walls of the mosque have arched windows which light up the place during the day. The center of the hall is adorned with a marble umbrella-shaped chandelier, and a mihrab on the western wall. Overall, Jama Masjid, Dehradun is a fine example of Mughal and Rajputana architecture and is one of the oldest and most important mosques in India.
