Overview:
The cairns located in Mackay are believed to have been erected by local Aborigines some 1,000 to 3,000 years ago. They current shape and size may have only developed within the last several hundred years. The group of cairns are significant for their research potential in understanding the Aboriginal history of the Mackay region. History:
The cairns in Kadapperi are all located within a two hundred metre radius, and are made from river cobbles. They are arranged in a circle, with each stone measuring between one and three metres in diameter. The cairns have been constructed using the same method across their entire face, with a layer of cobbles alternating with a layer of sand. The cairns in Mackay are the only known example of a group of ancient stone monuments in Australia. They are also believed to be the only example of a circular arrangement of cairns anywhere in the world.
