Overview:
Gaurisvara Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in the village of Gimar, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is a majestic temple complex built in the 12th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The temple is of great religious and historical importance, and is a popular pilgrimage site for devotees of Shiva. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Gaurisvara Temple consists of three large shrines, one to Shiva, one to Balaji (the newborn form of Vishnu) and the third to Krishna. The Shikhar ( summit ) of the temple is magnificently carved with intricately detailed figures of Hindu deities such as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Inside the sanctum, there is a huge Shiva Lingam and carved idols of Hindu gods and goddesses. Devotees can also pay homage to an ancient Black Stone in one of the carved panels of the Shikhar. Gaurisvara Temple is a very important spiritual centre for the Hindus of Rajasthan, and houses the famous ‘Gaurishankar Linga’, which is considered to be the most powerful Shiva Linga in the entire state.
