Bhangi Gate is a beautiful historical gate located in the old walled city of Delhi and is one of five gates leading into the city. Its red sandstone and marble exterior, intricate designs and sculptures, and its large scale make it a notable tourist attraction in the city. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Bhangi Gate has a number of prominent features which make it stand out from other gates in Old Delhi. The gate is approximately 30 meters high, built with red sandstone, and has four hinged doors which swing out from the gate into the city. A distinctive feature of the gate is the marble balcony that runs along its top, where visitors can admire the nearby sites of Delhi. The Bhangi Gate was constructed by Mughal Emperor Humayun in 1533, as part of the city wall which encompassed many of the notable monuments of Delhi. During the rule of the British, the Bhangi Gate was modified and strengthened towards the end of the 19th century to withstand military attacks if necessary.
