Agastisvara Temple, Vellanur In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
Agastisvara Temple is an 11th century temple, located in Vellanur, Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is an important Hindu shrine where devotees offer their prayers. The crowning glory of this temple is the exquisitely sculpted sandstone Nandi and Navagraha sculptures which are placed at the entrance. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple is decorated with many carved sculptures, and the mandapa has two figures of Yakshi and Maheshwara and a horse-man figure. Other prominent features of the temple are the small shrine to Goddess Parvati and the various bejeweled figures of various deities, including Lord Shiva and Vishnu, adorn the walls and the larger shrine. Interesting facts:
Agastisvara Temple is the only temple in Vellanur that houses the Navagraha shrines. The Navagraha sculptures are believed to contain a unique mystical energy, which when combined with the divine energy of Lord Shiva can help bring luck and prosperity.
