The Fort of Shivneri is believed to have been built in the sixth century, by the rulers of the Rashtrakuta Dynasty. It is believed to have been destroyed during the civil wars and re-built by the Nizamshahi rulers in the seventeenth century. Shivaji Maharaj was born inside this fort, in the hill sloppes of Bakshi Bazaar, around 1627. Shivaji Maharaj took possession of the fort in 1648 and used it as a strategic base for his conquests.
