Overview:
Fort of Shivneri is a 17th-century historical fort situated in Junnar in Pune district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the birthplace of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is perched atop a hill 5 miles north-east of Junnar. The fortress covers an area of approximately 5,000 acres and is the centre of a number of important events in Indian history. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The fort of Shivneri is known for its breathtaking view of the valley and its many historical monuments. It has various fortifications, gateways, granaries, water tanks and eleven ruined temples. The fort houses some of the most important monuments such as the impressive Zenith fortress, Shivneri Chauk, Padmavati Temple and many more. The Fort of Shivneri is believed to have been built in the sixth century, by the rulers of the Rashtrakuta Dynasty. It is believed to have been destroyed during the civil wars and re-built by the Nizamshahi rulers in the seventeenth century. Shivaji Maharaj was born inside this fort, in the hill sloppes of Bakshi Bazaar, around 1627. Shivaji Maharaj took possession of the fort in 1648 and used it as a strategic base for his conquests.
