Elephanta Caves In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
The Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted cave temples located on Elephanta Island, also known as Gharapuri, in the state of Maharashtra, India. This archaeological site is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and dates back to between the 5th-8th centuries AD. It was given the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The main feature of the caves are the seven main sculpted panels, or 'trimurti', depicting Shiva's three main aspects – Creator, Destroyer and Preserver – in various poses. Other carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses, features of Hindu mythology, as well as various animals, can also be found within the caves. One of the more notable sculptures is the 16 feet tall 'Sadashiva' in the main cave. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour
