Dolostva Mandapa , Mamallapuram Overview Dolostva Mandapa is a Jain-Hindu temple complex located in Mamallapuram, in the Kancheepuram district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple complex is a great example of secular architecture and the rich heritage of Tamil Nadu. The temple was constructed by Narasimhavarman II (also known as Rajasimha), one of the rulers of the Pallava dynasty that ruled the Tamil country in 6th and 7th centuries AD. Prominent Features The complex consists of two main temples: the Jain temple and the Hindu temple. The Jain temple is dedicated to Jain Teerthankar Parsvanatha and its construction is believed to have started in 690 AD. It is a two-storied temple and its walls are adorned with sculptures of Tirthankaras and celestial beings. The central shrine of the temple houses a grand sculpture of Parsvanatha. The Hindu temple is dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu. This temple also has two storeys and is adorned with reliefs depicting mythological scenes and dances. History The Dolostva Mandapa complex was built during the reign of Rajasimha, a ruler of the Pallava Dynasty. It is believed that he constructed the complex for both Jain and Hindu devotees. The complex is one of the oldest surviving Hindu and Jain monuments in the country and its importance has been well-acknowledged by numerous experts and scholars. Interesting Facts • The Dolostva Mandapa complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 as part of the group of monuments at Mamallapuram. • The complex is listed among the 44 protected monuments of India under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958. • Several experts believe that the complex served as an important venue for exchange of ideas between adherents of Jainism and Hinduism during the Pallava rule.
