Overview:
Dolmens, Panaikkadu is a prehistoric burial site dating back to the Iron Age (1000 BCE - 200 BCE). It is located in Thiruvalaputhur, in the Sivaganga district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the important megalithic sites in India and has yielded a large number of artifacts, including quartzite stones and a variety of ceramics. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The site consists of two concentric burial mounds surrounded by hundreds of megalithic artifacts and scattered skeletal remains. The outer mound is 8 metres in diameter and has several rectangular stone slabs which seem to have been arranged in a circle. This is believed to be an open-air funeral cemetery. The inner mound is 6 metres in diameter and is composed of several layers of quartzite stones, each up to 80 cm in thickness. It is believed to be a tumulus or a burial chamber.
