Overview:
Devaganga Ponds at Basavanabayane is an important cultural and historical site located in the Anekal taluk in the south Indian state of Karnataka. The site has two ponds known as the Devaganga and the Basavanabayane ponds. It is believed that these two ponds were built in the 8th century by a chieftain of the Tamraparni dynasty who reigned in the region at that time. History:
The Devaganga and Basavanabayane ponds are the main attractions of the site. There is also the Ramalingeshwara temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, standing tall near the banks of the Devaganga pond. The temple is an architectural marvel and is believed to have been built in the 12th century. There is also a small shrine dedicated to Harihara, near the temple, which is believed to have been built around the same time. The tradition around the site is that during the 8th century, a chieftain of the Tamraparni dynasty wanted to construct a temple for Lord Shiva, but upon stumbling upon the Devaganga pond decided to build a temple at the site. After completing the construction of the temple, he then built a second pond, the Basavanabayane pond, for the people of the village to use for bathing and other chores.
