Bhojshala and kamal Maula’s Mosque Overview-
Bhojshala and Kamal Maula’s Mosque are two important monuments situated in Dhar, a town in the south-western Madhya Pradesh. They are the perfect example of two great religious traditions - Hinduism and Islam - coexisting in perfect harmony. Although the two monuments share a similar structure and form, yet they differ in their religious symbolism.
Prominent Features-
Bhojshala, a Hindu temple, is built on the bank of the Narmada river and is dedicated to the Hindu deity, Shiva. It is believed to be constructed during the reign of King Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty. The temple's conical roof, made of large slabs of stones, stands atop a stepped altar. The temple also features an eight-pillared hall that is used to conduct religious ceremonies during special occasions.
Kamal Maula’s Mosque, on the other hand, is an elegant sixteenth century monument built to house a Muslim saint, Kamal Maula. The mosque is made up of three sections, all of which are elegantly decorated. The structure is further highlighted by its distinctive columns, arches and domes.
History-
Bhojshala and Kamal Maula’s Mosques were both built during the reign of King Bhoj of the Paramara Dynasty. According to historical records, the two monuments were constructed within a few years of each other, thus reflecting the peaceful spirit of religious harmony and tolerance that existed at that time. The two monuments have stood the test of time ever since, providing visitors with a unique insight into the harmonious relationship between Hindu and Muslim religious traditions.

-The two monuments were placed on the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2004.
-Bhojshala and Kamal Maula’s Mosque share a strange relationship. It is believed that the mosque and the temple are locked in a ‘Jugalbandi’ (competitive banter) during the festival of Holi.
