History:
Barber’s Mahel is well known for the legend that a barber named Muhammad Abu befriended the villagers and saved them from an evil general by taking them to the pond for safety. The sacredness of the pond is increased by the presence of a shrine dedicated to Muhammad Abu that still stands at the pond’s edge. The lake is also renowned for its plethora of plant and aquatic life, such as Mahaal fish and frogs, as well as a variety of migratory wetland birds. One of the historical monuments of India,it tells the story of a bygone era.
The village of Mahel was a fishing port that was established by the Portugese in the 15th century. It is said that a barber named Muhammad Abu lived there and provided haircuts for the fishing village’s population of Hindu and Muslim families. One day, a general of the Portuguese army attempted to capture the village but was apparently confounded by its lack of military installation. It is said that Muhammad Abu took the people of Mahel on a boat to a nearby pond, now known as Barber’s Mahel, and hid them there.
