The Arch of Viceroy is a historic monument located in Purana Qila, Delhi. It is widely regarded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the most popular monuments in India. The arch was built in 1538, as a passageway from the Mughal palace to the fort of Purana Qila. It was designed by the Mughal emperor Babur in honor of his powerful successor, Humayun. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Arch of Viceroy is a majestic, two-level structure. The lower level is supported by four columns and four pointed arches, while the upper one has two dome-like protrusions. The arch features intricate stone carvings, and is topped with intricate ornamentation. The entrance is marked with two lionesses clad in silk, standing guard over the entrance.
