Megalithic Cists and Cairns,Sirukalattur In India: History,Facts, & Services

Megalithic Cists and Cairns,Sirukalattur are archaeological sites composed of large blocks of stone built to mark a burial site. These cists are generally circular in shape, with a flat stone circle inside, typically around three to four meters in diameter and made of large stones. Some cists contain multiple burials, while others are singular tombs. Cairns are also present during these sites, typically made from smaller stones and arranged in precise, geometric patterns. Megalithic Cists and Cairns,Sirukalattur is located in South India, Tamil Nadu, near Sirukalattur. It is believed to be part of a Neolithic or Iron Age cultural complex. Examinations at the site reveal it to be around four thousand years old, dating from the Chalcolithic or Early Bronze Age period. Prominent features of the site are the large standing stones, of which there are several clusters along a two-kilometer long line. Some of the stones are upright and of varying heights, while others have fallen and are lying flat amongst the sand. These stones are believed to be ritual markers, as there are large cairns and cists surrounding them. Megalithic Cists and Cairns,Sirukalattur is believed to have been a burial site and there are several finds of human bones and artifacts that suggest this was the case. The cist containing the bones was discovered to be of the same age as the site and it is believed that the burial was made during the Chalcolithic or Early Bronze Age. Some interesting facts about Megalithic Cists and Cairns are that it is the largest megalithic site in India, having been studied for about two decades. The area also contains several stone edifices and monuments, indicating that it was a very important ritual and burial site for the early inhabitants of the region. The site also contains several carvings and inscriptions of unknown origin, adding further mystery to it.
