Overview:
Ancient Mound in part of S.No. 855 A is a prehistoric mound built in the Central Plains of the United States which is located in Lawrence County, Illinois. This ancient mound was discovered in 1999 when a surveyor from the Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) was called in to investigate an area that was proposed as the site for a school. The mound has been dated back to about 3,500 years ago and is believed to have been built by the Hopewell Culture. The mound has a conical shape, measures 12 feet in height, and has a diameter of 72 feet. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Ancient Mound in part of S.No. 855 A consists of several distinctive features, including circular components of various sizes, a rectangular flat area at its top, and several possible construction features near its base. Archaeologists believe that the structure was made from basket-loads of soil brought to the site from the surrounding area. While the exact nature of the mound’s use is not known, its builders likely had an organized method of construction and probably some type of ritualistic or ceremonial purpose for the structure. The Ancient Mound in part of S.No. 855 A is the only known Hopewell mound in Lawrence County, and its existence and location was confirmed in 1999 when a surveyor from the Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) reported that he had discovered it.
