Overview:
The Airavatesvara Temple is a religious monument located in the town of Darasuram in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Often referred to as the “Pancha Sabha”, the temple is an architectural marvel, believed by some to be even more impressive than the more famous Brihadisvara Temple at Tanjore. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is especially renowned for its intricate sculptures that depict scenes from Hindu mythology. The construction of the Airavatesvara Temple was completed in the period between 1146 and 1160 CE. It is one of the “Great Living Chola Temples”, a group of temple complexes that are designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. History:
The Airavatesvara Temple has two main shrines, each of which contain mandapas or hallways that serve as the central part of the temple. Other interesting features of the temple include a colonnaded cloister, a 1000-pillar hall, and numerous small shrines that are dedicated to various legendary figures, such as Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesha.
