The history of Jehovah's Witnesses in Fiji dates back to the early 1800s when Fijian natives started being baptized as a result of missionary work. From 1835 onwards, the British primarily had control over the country and there were other Christian denominations that were established as a result of their influence. For over a century, the inreach of Christian missionaries, including Jehovah’s Witnesses, was limited due to native culture and difficulty of access. In 1922, one early missionary was known to traverse the main island of Viti Levu on a bicycle to spread the teachings of the Bible. In the mid 1950s two missionaries came to Fiji, followed by the first official missionary couple. Shortly afterwards, Jehovah’s Witnesses were registered as a religious organization in Fiji. By the 1960s congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses began to form and they held their first district convention in 1970.
