It was built in 1768 on the site of an earlier wooden church, and has been restored various times over the centuries. The current church is a large five-domed structure, covered in white plaster and surmounted by five gilded onion domes. It is notable for its ornate interior, with wooden carvings and beautiful frescos. The church is also home to a large number of valuable icons and other religious paintings. History:

St. Alexander's Orthodox Church is named after Saint Alexander Nevsky, a legendary Russian prince and military leader who is credited with defending Russia from invasion in the 13th century. The original wooden church that stood on the site was likely built around 1720. In 1768, the church was replaced by the present Baroque-style structure, designed by Dimitri Choglokov. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Estonia.
