Holy Spirit Church In Estonia: History,Facts, & Services
Holy Spirit Church in Estonia is a medieval Orthodox church located in Tartu, a city in the south of Estonia. The church has a rich history, beginning with its construction around the year 1500 as an Eastern Orthodox Church. The church was originally dedicated to the Holy Spirit, and was part of the Byzantine Empire at the time of its construction.
The church experiences several renovations and additions over the centuries, culminating in its conversion to Lutheranism after the Reformation in 1583. Eventually, it was abandoned in 1879 when some parts of the building collapsed due to a fire during a siege. The church was then partially restored in 1883.
Holy Spirit Church is now used as a functional Orthodox church again. It offers services like baptisms, weddings, and memorials. It is also available for use as a destination for Orthodox Christians from other countries. The inside of the church has preserved frescoes and religious paintings as well as a movable iconostasis which was originally crafted in 1883.
