History:

The Aros Aarhus Art Museum, located in the city of Aarhus, Denmark, was established in 1859 as a private civic association by local citizens. Its purpose was to support the creation and display of art in the city. The earliest form of the museum was a collection of donated artworks displayed in the City Hall complex. In 1888, the collection was moved to its own building. Initially, the focus of the museum was on the arts of the past, specifically from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In the early 20th century, the museum began to acquire modern art, especially from the Skagen school. The museum was then taken over by the municipality of Aarhus in 1938 and was renamed the Aarhus Kunstmuseum (Aarhus Art Museum). The building was renovated in 1954 and the collection was expanded. In 1974, the museum was moved to a larger building designed by architect C.F. Møller. In 2003, the museum was rebranded as the Aros Aarhus Art Museum, reflecting the wider scope of its collection.
