, Børglum Abbey is an important historical landmark, located in Løgstør Municipality, North Jutland, Denmark. The abbey was built in 1160 by Benedictine monks and served as the residence of the Bishop of Aalborg. It is one of the oldest religious foundations in Denmark, and one of the few abbeys that still exist in the country. It is one of the best churches in Denmark which you must visit.

History:

Børglum Abbey was founded in 1160, when Bishop Volkold of Aalborg was appointed to take charge of the new monastery. The abbey served as the bishop's residence until 1250 when it was taken over by the Cistercian order. The monastery was subsequently destroyed in a fire and rebuilt in the 13th century. In 1536, the abbey was secularised and became the main residence of the noble family Løgstør of north-Jutland. In the 19th century, the abbey was restored by Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsøe, and today the abbey is again a Benedictine monastic house. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Denmark.
