History:
Valle de San Juan, located in the municipal stretch of Pinar del Rio, Cuba, is one of the earliest settlements in the country. One of the ten original Spanish settlements, this is one of the earliest villages in Cuba, founded in 1514 by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, then the Captain General of the Spanish forces in the Caribbean. The original name was Santa Cruz de San Juan del Palo that was later shortened to Valle de San Juan and then expanded to include the nearby town of Pinar del Rio. In the 16th century, Valle del San Juan was one of the major ports for Spanish ships and was frequently visited by Christopher Columbus. It was also the first place to introduce new crops to the region, such as cotton, coffee, tobacco, yams, plantains, and sweet potatoes. By the time the 19th century began, the village had grown to become an essential economic center in the region by serving as a port for ships carrying phosphate rock from the coastal areas to the inland regions. The 19th century also saw the establishment of a cigar manufacturing industry in Valle de San Juan, making it an important economic center in the province. It also became the center of political activism, with Cuban rebels often attending the town's meetings and gatherings. In modern times, Valle de San Juan has become a center of tourist activity in the region, with many hotels, restaurants, and other businesses springing up in the town. It is also a popular destination for bird watching, as the area is home to an estimated 300 species of Caribbean birds. Additionally, a new hospital and a new municipal hall have been built in the town for the betterment of Valle de San Juan's inhabitants. Sources: - Country Studies. "Valle de San Juan (Cuba)."
