History:

The Marti Theater (Teatro Marti) is a historic Art Deco-style theater located in the center of the Cuban city of Havana. It opened in 1913 during the height of the Golden Age of Cuban culture and has been the main stage of some of the most important works of Cuban theater ever since. The theater was designed by famous Cuban architect Federico Marxoden, who was also responsible for many other important works of Havana architecture, such as the Bacardi Building and the Capitolio Nacional. The façade and interior of the building are of Art Deco style, while the stage is of Art Nouveau style. The theater was named after Cuban national hero José Martí, who fought for Cuban independence from Spain. During his lifetime, Martí wrote widely about the theater, including in his poem "En el teatro Martí": "Arde en mi: el fuego de la acción, de actuando en el Teatro Martí!" ("Burns in me: the fire of action, of acting in the Marti Theater!"). Since it opened, the theater has been the site of many important works. This includes being the home of the National Theater of Cuba, which is responsible for producing and promoting Cuban theater.
