History:

Castillo de Jagua, also known as Fortaleza de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua or Castle of Jagua, is a 16th century fortress located at the entrance of the bay of Cienfuegos in Cuba. The fortress was built in 1545 by the Spanish to protect the city of Cienfuegos and its port from invasions by foreign forces. The fortress is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and serves as a reminder of the important role that fortresses once played for the defense of the Spanish colonies. The fort was initially constructed by Pedro de Quejo, an adventurer, and first Captain of Cienfuegos, and later expanded by Francisco de Luján.
