History:
Cayo Sabinal is located in the eastern region of Cuba, in the province of Holguin. It is a small island located 164 km (102 miles) south of the mainland near the town of Gibara. The island is part of the Beaches of Holguin, an archipelagic chain which includes more than 40 islands and keys, among which is Cayo Saetia in the south and Cayo Bariay towards the north. The island has been a place of historical significance for centuries, as it served as an outpost for the Spanish during their colonial rule. During the 1800s, it was the last point of resistance for cimarrones—escaped slaves who fled to the island in search of freedom. It was also the site of a battle between Honduran Mambisa Victoriano Castañón and Spanish troops in 1897. In the early 1900s, several families moved to Cayo Sabinal to farm and raise livestock, and a small village was established there. The island has since become a popular tourist destination, especially during the Cuban summer months, and is home to several hotels, restaurants, and resorts. It offers a variety of activities, such as swimming, snorkelling, fishing, and diving, as well as various cultural and entertainment options.
