The Salto (or waterfall) del Guayabo is located in the province of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba. It is the second largest waterfall on the island, cascading down a vertical distance of about 29 meters (95 ft), with a width of roughly 10 meters (33ft). The name of the waterfall comes from the nearby village of Guayabo, which dates back to the 16th century. The village was founded by Spanish colonizers who called it “Villa del Guayabo” after the native Guayabo people who lived in the area. The waterfall itself is located in a park that is part of the Cuchillas del Toa UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and is considered to be one of the most important sites for scientific research in Cuba.
