History:

Guanaroca Lagoon, or Laguna de Guanaroca, is located in Cienfuegos Province in Cuba. It is a man-made body of water, the result of two of the former lagoons in the area being connected in 1950. It covers an area of 11.8 square kilometers in the heart of the city of Cienfuegos and is an important wetland for thousands of migratory birds which use it as stopover points during their migratory journey. The lagoon has a deep historical significance, with evidence of human activity dating back to the 16th Century. It was inhabited by local natives who used the area for growing vegetables, fishing and gathering salt from the lagoon. During the 18th century, the area was the port of La Punta, connecting the Caribbean and South America. It was also used as a naval base and then later as a naval port. In 1819, Generalissimo Santander founded the town of Cienfuegos and in 1829 it was incorporated into the Province of Las Villas. The lagoon played a major part in the development of the town, with the export of fresh fish, shrimp, octopus, oysters and crabs all taking place from it. At the beginning of the 20th Century, the lagoon was linked to the Caribbean Sea via a channel leading to Cienfuegos Bay.
