The Guachinango Ecological Reserve is located in the municipality of Pinar del Rio, in western Cuba. The Reserve was created in 2010 with the purpose of conserving and protecting the flora, fauna, and scenic beauty of the region. The Reserve is comprised of four distinct protected areas totaling around 32,000 hectares (78,980 acres). The first area is the Sierra de Guachinango, which is a rugged mountain range reaching heights of up to 700 meters (2,297 feet) and covering 8,310 hectares (20,520 acres). This area covers parts of the provinces of Pinar del Rio and Artemisa. The second area is the Valle de Viñales, a valley of stunning karst topography which is considered to be one of the most beautiful areas of the country. This area is just over 15,500 hectares (38,500 acres). The third area is the Las Terrazas Region, this is a distinctive limestone region, located within the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve, which is home to 3,100 hectares (7,674 acres). The fourth and final area is the coastal mangrove wetlands, this area includes 12,000 hectares (29,653 acres) of mangrove swamps, wet grasslands, and coral reefs.
