The Ernest Hemingway House, or La Finca Vigia, is a historical landmark in Havana, Cuba. Located on the outskirts of Havana in the foothills of the Sierra Maestra, it was the home of Ernest Hemingway for nearly twenty years from 1939 to 1960. The house was built in 1886 by the owners of a nearby sugar mill, and was part of a 182-acre estate which included a garden and an orchard. In 1939, Hemingway purchased La Finca Vigia, and spent much of his time there writing, fishing in the nearby streams and living with his two wives, Martha Gellhorn and Mary Welsh. He also raised a menagerie of animals, including peacocks, cats, guinea pigs and a beloved collection of polydactyl cats, which he named "six-toed cats". Hemingway worked in a studio located on the second floor of the house, which was kept preserved with his original writings, and where many of his famous works such as For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea were written. After Hemingway’s death in 1961, the house was taken over by the Cuban government, which turned it into a museum. The house and its surrounding grounds remain completely untouched and are now open to the public. Visitors can tour the house and visit the famous six-toed cats, which still roam the grounds and are looked after by caretakers.
