History:

The Catedral de San Carlos de Borromeo is the main Catholic chapel in the city of Cienfuegos in Cuba. It was constructed in 1868 on the foundation of an old colonial chapel that had been built in 1820, and was completed in 1881. The architectural style of the cathedral is Renaissance with Byzantine touches. The original chapel was destroyed by a major fire in 1861 and subsequent rebuilding efforts were funded by local donations for the most part. The church was originally called the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, but was later renamed in honor of St. Charles Borromeo. The interiors of the cathedral have had several renovations over the years, most recently after a devastating hurricane which caused extensive damage to the roof and many of the interior furnishings. In the nave of the Catedral de San Carlos de Borromeo, one can find several unique works of art, such as a reliquary of Francisco Javier, the patron saint of sailors. In 2015, the Cienfuegos Diocese celebrated the centenary of the consecration of the cathedral. Since its consecration, the Catedral de San Carlos de Borromeo has been an important religious and cultural center in Cienfuegos. For the faithful, it has been a place of worship, but also a center for cultural programming such as concerts, plays, and other artistic activities.
