History:

The original church on the site, constructed in the 12th century, was destroyed by fire in 1258. Following its destruction, the Archbishop of Vienna, Rudolf IV, commissioned the construction of a new cathedral in its place. Construction began in 1359 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1147 by Pope Eugene IV. The cathedral was badly damaged during the Ottoman invasion of Vienna in 1683, but it was rebuilt over the next 200 years in the Gothic style.
