St. Francis Church was founded in 1849 by the Jesuits, who had been in California since 1848. The cornerstone for the original Church was laid on St. Patrick's Day of the same year and opened for services the following Christmas Day. In 1868, a new building was erected on the grounds of the original church, and in 1886 it was made into a minor basilica by Pope Leo XIII. The church has been rebuilt and remodeled many times since, and it remains one of the city's oldest religious landmarks.
